RICHARD OLIVER SENTENCED IN BASILDON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES INCLUDING RAPE
Richard Oliver, aged 51, was formally sentenced at Basildon Crown Court after being found guilty of multiple serious child sexual offences, which included two counts of rape.The crimes, committed over a span of ten years from 2005 to 2015, involved two young girls who suffered profound harm as a result of his actions.
During the court proceedings, Judge Samantha Cohen delivered a stern rebuke to Oliver, criticizing his persistent denial of the allegations and his apparent lack of remorse.
She stated, “You refuse to accept your guilt and you seem to have no insight into how your behaviour has affected these women.
This nonsense simply tells me you have no remorse for what you have done.
You have no idea at all for the dreadful harm you have caused.” Victim impact statements were read aloud in court by prosecutor Edward Renvoize, providing a stark insight into the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victims.
One statement detailed the ongoing mental health struggles faced by one of the girls, saying, “I have nightmares regularly, I wake up in cold sweats and haven’t slept properly for months.
With my migraines, I barely have the energy to do essential things, which is affecting the mental health of my daughter.
I’m always so exhausted and when I get in from work, sometimes I just break down.
The stress I’m under makes things worse and I take 14 tablets a day.” In light of his crimes, Oliver was handed a substantial prison sentence of 15 years, which includes a term of nine years and eight months behind bars, with the remainder to be served on licence.
Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which bans him from any contact or communication with children under the age of 16 for an indefinite period.
The court’s decision underscores the severity of his offences and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
