RICHARD LEE'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN BODMIN, GILLINGHAM, HEMPSTEAD, AND WESTON-SUPER-MARE

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through multiple communities, Richard Lee, a former vicar with ties to Bodmin, Gillingham, Hempstead, and Weston-super-Mare, has been found guilty of heinous acts involving the invasion of privacy and the creation of indecent images of minors. The allegations against Lee span over a decade, during which he used covert surveillance equipment to spy on vulnerable individuals, including teenage girls and a mother and her daughter, within his parish jurisdictions.

Lee, aged 49 at the time of his arrest, was serving as a vicar at two churches in Somerset—St Augustine's in Locking and St Mary’s in Hutton—and was also based at All Saints Church in Hempstead. His criminal activities came to light after authorities discovered a cache of illicit images and videos stored on his personal laptop. The investigation was initiated when the police executed a search warrant at Lee’s residence near Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, last year. During the search, officers seized multiple computers and hard drives containing a disturbing collection of indecent material.

The material included 400 images classified as Category One, which is considered the lowest severity level, along with 84 videos of the same category. Additionally, the evidence revealed 51 images in Category Two, three in Category Three, and four images plus one video in Category Four, which is classified as the second highest severity level. Most of these images depicted a woman and three girls under the age of 16, with the majority having been deleted by Lee himself. Importantly, there was no evidence to suggest that these images had been shared beyond his personal collection.

Lee’s arrest took place at his parents’ home in Bodmin, Cornwall, where he immediately admitted to the charges during police interviews. Prosecutor Richard Posner highlighted the gravity of Lee’s actions, stating, “He filmed them at a time when they believed, thought and trusted they had privacy. He filmed a number of images all for his own sexual gratification and also searched for images of child abuse and made copies of these images. He was a pillar of the community.”

Throughout the proceedings, Lee maintained a stoic demeanor, showing no emotion as the court heard the details of his crimes. His defense attorney, Robin Shellard, expressed remorse on Lee’s behalf, emphasizing that his client blames himself daily for his actions. Shellard described Lee as a “truly broken man,” who has lost everything—his family, his calling as a clergyman, and his reputation—due to his own misconduct. The lawyer also noted that several parishioners had written letters of support, struggling to reconcile the man they once knew with his current disgrace.

Judge Neil Ford QC, presiding over the case at Bristol Crown Court, sentenced Lee to eight months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, owing to Lee’s previously “good character.” The judge acknowledged the severity of the crimes but justified the suspension by citing Lee’s remorse and the irreparable damage caused by his actions. The judge stated, “While sentences of imprisonment must be imposed, they can be suspended. It is right to say that nothing I can do by way of punishment will come close to the dreadful loss that you have brought upon yourself. You have lost your family and your calling as a clergyman.”

As part of his sentence, Lee was ordered to attend the Thames Valley Sexual Offenders Programme, sign the Sexual Offenders Register for ten years, and was disqualified from working with children indefinitely. The case has left a lasting stain on the communities of Bodmin, Gillingham, Hempstead, and Weston-super-Mare, where Lee’s actions have shattered trust and caused profound distress among those who once looked up to him as a spiritual leader.
