MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SISTERS
A man identified as Richard Brennan has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses against his three sisters.Brennan, who was between 17 and 24 years old at the time of the offences, confronted his sisters with disturbing claims that he needed their help with sexual urges before allegedly abusing them.
His sisters, Catherine Wrightstone, Yvonne Crist, and Paula Faye, decided to waive their right to anonymity to publicly name him.
Brennan, 64, who was previously a priest ordained in 1989 and later moved to the United States where he married and had a family, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to 24 counts, including 18 of indecent assault and six of rape.
He confessed to offences committed between 1978 and 1984, involving his sister Paula Faye aged 13 to 17, his sister Catherine Wrightstone aged nine to 14, and his sister Yvonne Crist around 20 years old.
Brennan entered formal guilty pleas after each of the women testified in court and before the final woman was cross-examined.
The court heard that he admitted to four sample charges of indecent assault and rape during his trial.
Brennan, previously residing in Rathfarnham and now living in the United States, has no prior convictions but faced serious charges due to the nature of his crimes.
The judge described the sisters' decision to report the misconduct as 'truly courageous' and expressed his admiration for their bravery.
He acknowledged the pattern of prolonged assaults, the betrayal of trust, and the significant psychological harm inflicted.
The court imposed a headline sentence of 12 years for the rapes against Catherine Wrightstone, and 10 years for those against Paula Faye, with other concurrent sentences for additional offenses.
The judge suspended the final year of Brennan’s sentence contingent upon his engagement with the Probation Service, recognising his remorse and cooperation.
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre praised the survivors’ bravery, emphasising the lifelong impact of such abuse and the difficulty of reporting within a family.
Brennan's brother Bernard Brennan, 67, also previously residing in the US, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of indecent assault committed between 1972 and 1975.
He was sentenced to four and a half years and has no previous convictions.
The court highlighted the devastating effects of sibling abuse and the importance of survivors’ courage in speaking out.
