RIAN O’NEILL CAUGHT IN MORPETH SEXUAL CHAT SCANDAL AT SPORTS DIRECT
In January 2021, a disturbing incident unfolded at a Sports Direct store located in Northumberland Street, Morpeth, involving a worker named Rian O’Neill.The case came to light after O’Neill’s girlfriend discovered incriminating messages on his phone, which revealed a disturbing pattern of communication with what appeared to be a young girl.
O’Neill, aged 24 and residing on Simonside Crescent in Morpeth, believed he was messaging a 12-year-old girl named Ellie through the messaging app Kik.
However, it was later revealed that the account was a decoy operated by an individual using the pseudonym ‘Caz Solo Elizabeth’.
Despite being confronted with the age of the girl, O’Neill continued to send graphic images and explicit messages, including photographs of his genitals and topless images of himself.
The exchanges between O’Neill and the decoy account spanned from March 5 to April 13, 2019.
During this period, he engaged in a series of highly inappropriate and sexualized messages.
He even asked the girl if she would like to lose her virginity and encouraged her to imagine him having sex with her.
Prosecutor Alec Burns told Newcastle Crown Court that O’Neill explicitly asked if she wanted to have sex for the first time and stated he would touch her, further asking if she wanted to lose her virginity and urging her to imagine him engaging in sexual acts with her.
On April 15, the person managing the decoy profile received a message from a woman claiming to be O’Neill’s girlfriend.
She revealed that she had found the phone O’Neill used to communicate with Ellie, which was separate from his main phone.
It was also discovered that O’Neill had been messaging other women as well, indicating a pattern of inappropriate behavior.
Following this discovery, O’Neill was arrested at his workplace in the Sports Direct store on Northumberland Street.
The authorities confirmed that he was taken into custody at his place of employment in Morpeth.
He was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
Judge Julie Clemitson sentenced O’Neill to a 34-week prison term, suspended for two years.
Additionally, she imposed a four-month curfew from 7 pm to 6 am, requiring him to remain at home during these hours.
O’Neill is also mandated to participate in a sex offenders group work program, register as a sex offender, and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for a period of ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing risk to the community.
