TAXI DRIVER RAYMOND SHORTEN JAILED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
Convicted rapist Raymond Shorten, jailed for 17 years for raping two women as he worked as a taxi driver, is believed to have attacked other women in crimes not yet revealed.Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has stated there is a 'reasonable proposition' that Shorten had assaulted additional victims, urging them to come forward.
Shorten was sentenced on Thursday for the rape of two women in separate 2022 incidents, after picking them up as passengers in his taxi.
Earlier this week, he received a 13-year sentence for raping a girl twice over a decade ago.
Harris emphasized that Shorten's mode of predatory behaviour suggested he was an experienced offender who may have committed other sexual crimes over a long period, including an attack on a child over ten years ago.
The Gardaí reviewed and suspended Shorten’s PSV license when the victims reported the assaults.
He was found guilty of two counts of rape and one of anal rape at the Central Criminal Court.
The victims described the assaults happening while they were vulnerable, with one waking to find herself in his car, having been raping her in the back seat, and the other being raped after falling asleep in his taxi.
Experts and victims’ advocates expressed hope that the lengthy sentences will serve as a deterrent and encourage more victims to come forward, highlighting the severity of his offences and the importance of justice.
