RAJINDER KUMAR FROM WEST BROMWICH ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE SEX OFFENSES INVOLVING UNDERCOVER COP

In August 2022, a disturbing case involving Rajinder Kumar, a resident of West Bromwich, came to light through an operation conducted by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit. Kumar, a 50-year-old glass cutter from the Black Country, engaged in a series of highly inappropriate and sexual communications with an individual he believed to be a 12-year-old girl, but who was actually an undercover police officer.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Kumar had initiated contact with what he thought was a young girl named Megan. From the outset, the conversations quickly took a sexual turn. Kumar sent a profile claiming he was 17 years old, while the officer responded that she was only 12. Despite this, Kumar continued the dialogue, even sharing a selfie of a shirtless man, which he claimed was himself. He asked the undercover officer what she looked like and suggested she follow him on Instagram, only to claim he had deleted his account when asked to send a picture.

As the conversation progressed, Kumar demanded that the officer send a nude photo in exchange for one of himself. He sent a picture of a muscular male torso and continued to send additional images, including pictures of a naked man, his genitals, and a man in underwear. The exchanges grew increasingly sexual, with Kumar playing a game of 'truth or dare' and sharing embarrassing stories, such as his mother walking in on him during a sexual act. He persistently asked the officer if she got aroused thinking about sex and made comments about her body, including wishing she was in the shower with him.

The undercover officer, portraying the young girl, described her as having a skinny body and a bra size of 28. Kumar responded with inappropriate comments, saying, “You are 12” and “you’re still growing, you will get bigger.” On another occasion, the officer mentioned she was at school, prompting Kumar to say, “You should be with me, we could kiss and cuddle. I would kiss you in all the naughty places too.” He continued to request more photographs of her in uniform, to which he responded with explicit praise, saying, “it looks as hot as f*** cutie, I just want to see more.”

Eventually, police arrested Kumar at his home on Whyley Street in West Bromwich. During questioning, he admitted to having been “stupid” and expressed remorse for his actions. His defense lawyer, Stephen Cadwaladr, highlighted that Kumar had no previous convictions and was overwhelmed by shame over his conduct. The court was informed that Kumar’s wife of 22 years remained supportive, despite her disappointment, and that he still had employment at an Oldbury-based firm.

Judge John Edwards addressed Kumar during sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of his behavior. He stated, “You are rightly ashamed of your behaviour. By doing what you did, you demean yourself by indulging in this behaviour. You were quite willing, effectively, to abuse a child. The fact that Megan only existed in your imagination is an irrelevance.” Kumar was convicted of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child between April 13 and May 24. He received a sentence of eight months’ imprisonment, suspended for 21 months, along with a 50-day rehabilitation activity requirement and a fine of £250. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years, underscoring the serious nature of his offences and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
