PROMISE MUSEMWA JAIL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN WATERLOOVILLE AND PORTSMOUTH

A 27-year-old man from Waterlooville, identified as Promise Musemwa, has been sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted of sexual assault by touching, following an incident in Portsmouth. The crime took place in the early hours of Saturday, 25 September 2021, when a teenage girl was subjected to an unwanted sexual act on the dancefloor of the popular pub, the One-Eyed Dog, situated on Elm Grove in Southsea.

According to reports, Musemwa approached the underage girl while she was on the dancefloor, and his actions were deemed to be a serious breach of personal safety and trust. The assault occurred during a night when the venue was bustling, highlighting the importance of vigilant security measures in busy nightlife districts. The incident was part of an ongoing police investigation that eventually led to Musemwa’s arrest and trial.

On Thursday, 17 August 2023, Portsmouth Crown Court formally sentenced Promise Musemwa to 12 months in prison after he was found guilty of the charges on 19 July. During the sentencing hearing, Judge Henry did not mince words, describing Musemwa’s conduct as “unacceptable” and “arrogant,” emphasizing the seriousness with which the court views such violations.

The investigation was led by Detective Constable Lauren Howard, who expressed her commitment to justice and the importance of protecting victims. She stated, “I’d like to echo the Judge’s comments, Musemwa’s actions were totally unacceptable and I’m pleased that following a thorough investigation we have secured this result at court. It sends a clear message that we take all reports of sexual assault very seriously and will seek to secure justice for victims.”

Detective Howard further highlighted the ongoing efforts by various agencies to ensure the safety of people in Portsmouth's vibrant nightlife scene. These efforts include collaborations with Portsmouth City Council’s Violent Crime Reduction Unit, licensing and environmental health teams, Street Pastors, South Central Ambulance Service, CCTV operators, security personnel, and staff at licensed venues.
