PHILLIP SIMELANE FROM WALSALL ADMITS MANSLAUGHTER OF TEENAGER ON BUS IN THE BLACK COUNTRY
In a tragic incident that shocked the community, Phillip Simelane, a 23-year-old man from Walsall, has admitted to the manslaughter of 16-year-old Christina Edkins, who was fatally stabbed while traveling on a bus in the Black Country.The incident took place as Christina was on her way to Leasowes High School in Halesowen, a journey that was supposed to be routine but ended in a devastating loss.
Simelane’s guilty plea was entered during a court session at Birmingham Crown Court.
The case has garnered significant attention, not only because of the tragic death but also due to the circumstances surrounding Simelane’s release from prison.
Police reports reveal that he was released less than three months prior to the attack, despite having a record marked by ‘warning markers’ and previous threats, including one where he threatened to stab his own mother.
Over the course of nearly a decade, authorities had received at least 21 calls from Simelane’s mother concerning his behavior.
These calls documented a range of issues, from criminal damage to heated disputes with his siblings.
Despite these warnings, he was not placed under any form of care or supervision following his release in December, raising questions about the adequacy of the monitoring and support systems in place.
During the court hearing, Christina’s family, who were present in the courtroom, expressed their anguish and demanded answers.
They are currently involved in ongoing internal reviews conducted by health and probation organizations, aiming to understand how such a tragedy could occur despite the numerous warnings and concerns.
On the day of the attack, Simelane approached Christina on the top deck of the number nine bus.
Without warning, he plunged a knife into her chest.
After the assault, he calmly descended the stairs and exited the bus at a stop, leaving passengers to tend to the injured girl.
Despite efforts by fellow passengers to revive Christina, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Today, Phillip Simelane pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, acknowledging that his mental state at the time of the attack played a role in his actions.
The case continues to raise serious concerns about mental health assessments, the effectiveness of risk management, and the protection of vulnerable individuals in the community.
