PHILLIP BROOKES FROM EAST COWES JAILED AFTER LIVE PAEDOPHILE HUNTER STING IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT
In September 2020, a disturbing incident unfolded on the Isle of Wight involving Phillip Brookes, a man from East Cowes, who was caught in a live sting operation conducted by a team of dedicated paedophile hunters. The confrontation was recorded and subsequently broadcast on Facebook, where it garnered widespread attention and over 200,000 views within just 24 hours. The footage vividly captured Brookes, 41 years old, smirking and displaying a dismissive attitude as the hunters challenged him about his alleged inappropriate communications with what he believed was an 11-year-old girl. Throughout the video, the group of hunters became visibly agitated as Brookes responded with sarcastic remarks, seemingly unrepentant and even claiming that he wanted to be caught. The confrontation escalated as the hunters read out records of his lewd chats, which included explicit messages and conversations.
At the climax of the video, a police officer arrived on the scene to arrest Brookes, who was then pinned against a wall by the hunters. During the exchange, Brookes attempted to dismiss the severity of his actions, claiming he had been punched in the ribs during the arrest. Hampshire Police had obtained copies of chat logs from the hunters, which played a crucial role in building the case against him.
Brookes’ criminal history is extensive. Court records from Winchester Crown Court revealed that he had previously uploaded a video of himself abusing a 12-year-old girl online, for which he was sentenced to a year in prison. Following his release, Brookes continued his disturbing behavior by sending vile messages to a girl claiming she was 11 years old, instructing her to perform sexual acts and engaging in depraved conversations.
He had also arranged to meet the girl in East Cowes, but instead, he was confronted outside a local supermarket by members of the Northwest Hebephile Hunters, who had traveled overnight from the north of England specifically to catch him. The live-streamed footage of this encounter was widely viewed and shared, highlighting the seriousness of his offenses.
During the trial at Winchester Crown Court, Brookes was cross-examined by prosecutor Gemma White. The court heard about his eight previous offenses against children since 2012 and the fact that he had been subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The jury took just one hour to deliberate before convicting Brookes on four counts of attempting to cause a girl to engage in sexual activity and one count of attempted communication with a child.
Judge Susan Evans sentenced Brookes to four years in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his repeated offenses and the danger he posed to children. His sentencing was scheduled for August, and he was remanded in custody pending the hearing.
Brookes’ criminal activities and subsequent arrest have drawn significant media attention, underscoring the importance of vigilant community efforts to combat child exploitation. His case exemplifies the ongoing threat posed by repeat offenders and the critical role of paedophile hunters in safeguarding vulnerable children from predatory individuals.
