ST HELENS: THUG ASSAULTED PARTNER REPEATEDLY AFTER PRISON RELEASE
A THUG with a long history of violence subjected his partner to "repeated" cases of violence while being released from prison licence after he was jailed over a fight in a St Helens bar earlier this year.Philip Roughsedge, 38, was sentenced to 40 months in prison as he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via video link on Friday, November 14.
Prosecuting barrister Christopher Hopkins outlined that Roughsedge had been repeatedly violent and controlling towards his partner throughout their relationship, describing it as “manipulative and nasty behaviour." The 38-year-old had pleaded guilty at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Court to controlling and coercive behaviour, three counts of assault by beating, ABH and criminal damage.
Roughsedge, who was jailed in February this year for 20 months after being involved in a prolonged fight in the former Buzzby’s bar in St Helens town centre, committed many of the offences after being released from prison on licence.
The court heard that Roughsedge had 19 previous convictions for 33 offences, including 13 for violence.
He had twice been jailed over cases of GBH or wounding, in 2018 and 2021, and was put behind bars earlier this year for affray related to the fight at Buzzby’s bar.
The court heard how this "repeated" violence impacted the victim.
A victim impact statement detailed how she lost her self-worth after being belittled and labeled as "worthless" by her ex-partner.
At one point, Roughsedge told her she wasn't even woman enough to have a child following a stillbirth.
She explained working at a mental health hospital, stating her mental health was deteriorating due to the abuse, leading her to question herself at work.
She described how constant controlling behaviour caused her to lose contact with family and friends, as Roughsedge threatened her family if she tried to see them.
She felt anxious around him, unsure of his mood or reactions, claiming she has been forever changed and will never recover.
The court detailed four separate assaults by Roughsedge.
In December last year, he grabbed her around the throat.
In August this year, upon his release from jail, he slapped her across the face, causing a black eye.
On October 2, he threw a bedroom door at her, grazing her leg, and damaged a £900 Canada Goose jacket.
The next day, he dragged her from the kitchen into the garden, grabbed her by the hair and dragged her to the ground, spat on her, and struck her with a brick on her left leg.
He threatened to stab her, and when he returned outside, he dragged her to the ground again, striking her in the face and insulting her as "worthless".
Judge Neil Flewitt KC sentenced Roughsedge to 40 months, with the condition he serve up to half in custody.
