BEDFORD SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR ATTACKING YOUNG WOMAN

A man named Philip Mundle, aged 31 and lacking a fixed abode, was found guilty and sentenced following a serious sexual assault.

The court was told that he pursued an 18-year-old woman after she left a pub in Bedford during April, eventually attacking her in an alley on Silver Street.

This assault was captured on CCTV footage, and the victim reported the incident to authorities soon afterward.

Mundle was subsequently detained and arrested on suspicion of rape.

He received a custodial sentence of seven and a half years for the assault, along with an extended sentence of three years, which permits recall to prison within the next 10 and a half years.

He was also sentenced to an additional month for physically assaulting an emergency worker.

The court mandated that he must register as a sex offender permanently and issued a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim for 10 years.

The judge commented on the audacity of the offence and recognized the enduring psychological harm suffered by the victim, who experiences nightmares and reports seeing the attacker in her private spaces.

The defendant's background includes assessments that revealed an unusually low IQ, a history of childhood trauma, and a hearing impairment, though he has no prior convictions related to sexual offenses.

It was also noted that he spat in the face of a police officer during his arrest.
