PHILIP MAY SHREWSBURY SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS FOR HISTORIC ABUSE CASES

In a significant case that has shocked the community of Shrewsbury, Philip May, a 60-year-old man from Wem, was handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses. The sentencing took place at Preston Crown Court on Friday, July 29, following a detailed trial that uncovered a disturbing history of abuse spanning several years.

According to court records, the allegations against May first came to light in 2019 when a woman approached the police, claiming she had endured severe sexual abuse at the hands of May during her childhood. Her account was corroborated by a second woman, who also disclosed that she had been a victim of the same individual. Both women’s testimonies painted a troubling picture of ongoing abuse that reportedly occurred between 2005 and 2009 in Hesketh Bank.

Following these revelations, law enforcement officials took swift action. May was formally summoned to appear in court on charges encompassing 24 separate offenses, including rape, sexual assault, sexual touching, and attempted rape. Despite his initial plea of not guilty, the case proceeded to trial, where the evidence presented led to a unanimous verdict of guilt on all counts on Wednesday, July 27.

The court’s decision resulted in a sentence of 30 years in prison for May. Under the terms of his sentence, he is required to serve at least two-thirds of the term before being considered for parole, which means he will be eligible for release after serving 20 years. Additionally, May will remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community of Shrewsbury and beyond.
