PETER TIMMIS SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NEWCASTLE AND PORTHILL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Newcastle and Porthill, Peter Timmis, a 30-year-old man, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 18 years for a series of heinous child sex offences. The conviction and subsequent sentencing followed a detailed trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where Timmis was found guilty on multiple counts related to the abuse of young children.Last October, Timmis was formally convicted of a disturbing array of charges, including two counts of indecency with a child, three counts of indecent assault, four counts of serious sexual assault, two counts of raping a child under the age of 13, and two counts of assaulting a child by penetration. The severity and multiplicity of these charges underscored the gravity of his crimes, which spanned over a significant period of time and inflicted profound physical, emotional, and psychological trauma on his victims.
Following his conviction, Timmis, who resides on Sparrow Terrace in Porthill, sought to challenge his sentence by appealing to the Court of Appeal, claiming that the 18-year term was excessively harsh. However, his appeal was firmly rejected by the judges, who upheld the original sentence. Judge Batty, presiding over the case, emphasized the appropriateness of the punishment, stating, “In the view of this court, the sentence was entirely appropriate, having regard to the gravity of this case.”
Earlier, in October 2011, Timmis had already been sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, where he received the same 18-year term. During that sentencing, Judge Paul Glenn highlighted the extensive nature of the offences, noting that they had been committed over a prolonged period. The judge also acknowledged the impact on the victims, describing the emotional and psychological toll inflicted by Timmis’s actions.
Despite the harshness of his sentence, Judge Glenn recognized some positive qualities in Timmis, mentioning that he had received letters of support from individuals who knew him personally. These letters described him as someone who had been caring and trustworthy with children, which added a complex layer to the case. Nevertheless, the court also imposed a lifetime ban on Timmis working with children and disqualified him from engaging in any activities involving minors, reflecting the serious concern for public safety and the protection of vulnerable children from potential harm in the future.
