PETER SHAW OF NORTHWICH SENTENCED FOR KILLING NEIGHBOUR'S PET CAT WITH AIR RIFLE

In a disturbing incident that shocked the local community of Northwich, Peter Geoffrey Shaw, a resident of Dane Bank Road, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The case centered around Shaw’s reckless act of shooting his neighbour’s beloved pet cat, Roxy, with an air rifle, an act that ultimately led to the feline’s tragic death.

Roxy, a gentle and timid six-year-old cat owned by Isobel Cooper, was known for her loyalty and affectionate nature. On the afternoon of June 20, 2018, Roxy was in her owner’s kitchen enjoying her evening meal before venturing outside into the garden. The garden was separated from Shaw’s property by a fence, which Roxy had often used as a vantage point to patrol her territory.

According to reports, Roxy jumped onto the fence that divided the two gardens. Suddenly, a loud bang was heard, prompting Isobel Cooper to rush outside in concern. Upon reaching the scene, she found her pet lying on the ground, gasping for breath. Her tail was puffed up, and she was crying in distress. Alarmed, Isobel looked over the fence and saw Shaw returning to his house, which raised immediate suspicion.

Isobel quickly transported Roxy to the veterinarian for urgent medical attention. An X-ray revealed the presence of a pellet lodged inside her body. Veterinarians initially believed they could remove the pellet, but as Roxy’s condition worsened, further examination showed that the pellet had perforated her bowel, causing severe internal injuries. Despite all efforts, the decision was made to humanely euthanize Roxy to prevent further suffering.

Following the incident, the RSPCA was contacted by Isobel Cooper. An investigation was launched, leading to the seizure of an airgun from Shaw’s residence. Inspector Cara Challinor from the RSPCA detailed the events, explaining that Roxy had been outside in the garden when she was shot.

Shaw, who runs a company called Shaws Fencing Ltd, pleaded guilty in court to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The court’s judgment reflected the seriousness of the offense, and Shaw was sentenced to an 18-week custodial sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, pay costs amounting to £2,347, and was handed a ten-year ban on keeping any animals.

The community and Roxy’s owner expressed their grief and disappointment over the incident. Isobel Cooper described Roxy as a loyal and healthy cat who loved to patrol her garden, and she shared how difficult it has been to cope with her loss. The case served as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of cruelty towards animals.
