MAN LYING ABOUT MILITARY SERVICE ATTACKS WOMAN AND HER DAUGHTER IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Michelle Carter, a 38-year-old woman, recounted a terrifying incident when she was attacked by Peter Newman, who claimed to be a military veteran. The assault occurred in June 2014 at their home in Dursley, Gloucestershire, when Newman, who had fabricated his military service, suddenly turned violent after a minor disagreement when Chantelle, Michelle's 19-year-old daughter, slammed a door.
Newman, who was pretending to be a soldier using a fake military number, grabbed Michelle by the throat, slammed her into a kitchen counter, and punched her repeatedly.
Michelle, during the attack, called 999 and managed to escape injury, but she feared for her life.
Police arrived soon after, and Newman was arrested and charged with two counts of assault.
During his trial, it emerged that Newman had lied about his military service, claiming to have served in the Scots Guard and the Paras, but these claims were disproven by the MOD, which confirmed he never served in the army.
Newman had used a military service number belonging to a man born in 1933, Ian Wilson.
The court discovered that Newman had been employed and claiming benefits due to fake claims of PTSD, but in reality, he had never been in the military and had a history of assault convictions dating back to 2005 in Scotland.
Newman pleaded guilty to two counts of assault; however, the judge sentenced him to 20 months in prison because his lies invalidated his guilty plea.
The judge noted Newman’s unhealthy obsession with military memorabilia and his history of deception.
Michelle expressed her disbelief at Newman’s extensive lies, which led her to believe she did not truly know him.
The incident highlighted Newman’s pattern of deception, including his false military claims, which he maintained to impress others and bolster his benefits claim.
Michelle was left feeling terrified and betrayed, and the court's verdict reflected the severity of his dishonesty and violent behavior.
