TRURO VIOLENT ABUSER RANG VICTIM FROM PRISON 99 TIMES IN ONE DAY
A violent abuser who tried to strangle his former partner then rang her 99 times in one day from prison has been sent to jail for two years.Peter Kelly, aged 44, of Penryn Street, Redruth, appeared at Truro Crown Court on Wednesday (December 7) to be sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a woman in Truro.
He was remanded in custody in October after breaching his bail conditions following the assault on September 24 in which he tried to strangle his victim and left her with two black eyes.
But even when he was in prison, he continued to intimidate his victim by phoning her and threatening to take her beloved dogs away.
Two days before his appearance in court for sentencing, he made 99 unsuccessful phone calls to her from prison.
Sentencing Kelly to two years in prison and ordering a ten-year restraining order against him, Judge Simon Carr said the two-year relationship was violent "almost in its entirety".
This attack was the culmination of this violence, not an isolated incident.
Kelly had come back, as he often did, drunk and got into an argument with his partner, then assaulted her causing two black eyes and bruising to the arms and throat where he tried to strangle her.
He made repeated threats about what would happen if she sought police help or pursued a case against him.
Judge Carr emphasized that Kelly threatened her that if she proceeded to pursue any claim, he would remove her dogs from her.
Kelly has already had 19 court appearances for 29 offences, including multiple convictions for violence and breach of orders against a former partner in 2011 and 2018.
Judge Carr told Webb that the current victim was "clearly terrified" of him and the consequences of his drunken behavior, especially regarding her dogs.
He warned that if Kelly breached the ten-year restraining order and contacted the victim in any way, he could face up to five years in prison.
