CLACTON MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL MOTHER MURDER
Peter Dickson, a 37-year-old male, was convicted of murdering his mother, Carol Cooper, aged 66, at her residence on St Vincent Road in Clacton.During the trial, it was revealed that he had seized control over her financial affairs and used her money to pay for various personal items, including a premium Sky television package, online movie services, and his mobile phone.
The jury reached a verdict of guilt after a twelve-day trial, with prosecutors describing the murder as a 'brutal and vicious attack.' The victim was found lying in bed with a pillow placed over her face at the scene.
The judge at Chelmsford Crown Court imposed a minimum prison term of 18 years, expressing outrage over the crime.
The judge commented, 'No one seated here can feel anything but anger and revulsion for your actions toward that innocent woman, who was also your mother, depriving her of life and leaving your family with an irreplaceable sense of loss and grief.' Despite earlier confessions of manslaughter, Dickson denied murder charges, claiming he did not intend to kill her.
A psychiatric assessment suggested he might have been suffering from a personality disorder.
It was also disclosed that he was registered as her carer and that she depended on a disability allowance.
The court heard that she had intended to confront him over his misuse of her funds and her desire to disinherit him before her death.
Her family expressed deep sorrow over the event; her sister Daphne Wilson said, 'Our beloved Carol was taken from us in a cruel manner by her own son.
We believe justice has been achieved, and she can now find peace.'
