PETER CHAPMAN FROM LITTLEHAMPTON SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC CONTROL AND COERCIVE BEHAVIOUR
A man identified as Peter Chapman, residing in Derwent Close, Littlehampton, has been formally sentenced to serve three years in prison after being convicted of serious controlling and coercive conduct towards his former partner.The court proceedings revealed that Chapman exercised an oppressive level of dominance over his victim for a period exceeding two years, dictating her choices regarding clothing, diet, and even her movements.
This pattern of behavior inflicted significant psychological trauma, leaving the victim in a state of extreme distress.
Chapman’s actions were characterized by a persistent attempt to manipulate and dominate his partner’s life, which ultimately led to his conviction on charges related to controlling and coercive behavior.
Following a thorough trial, the court found him guilty of these offences and imposed a five-year restraining order to prevent any further contact or harassment of the victim.
The sentencing underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats domestic abuse cases, especially those involving coercive control.
PC Josh Zniszczol, the investigating officer, commented on the case, stating, “Chapman has caused his victim extreme stress and anxiety over the few years that they were in a relationship.
Controlling behaviour in a relationship ruins lives and Chapman has clearly demonstrated that he is capable of this and have shown no remorse for his actions throughout.” He emphasized the importance of addressing domestic abuse, affirming, “Any form of domestic abuse will not be tolerated.
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, we will do whatever we can to bring those responsible to justice.”
