PETER BRADY BUCKSBURN DOG ABUSE CASE: ABERDEEN MAN'S BRUTAL ATTACK ON PET LEADS TO COMMUNITY SENTENCE

Peter James Brady, born on December 31, 1983, and residing at Stoneyton Terrace in Bucksburn, Aberdeen, became the subject of a serious criminal case after he was convicted in 2019 of subjecting his pet dog to a prolonged and vicious assault in the streets of Bucksburn.

According to court reports, Brady was found to have physically abused his dog in a manner that was both relentless and brutal. He admitted to authorities that he had seized the animal by its legs and repeatedly thrown it to the ground, followed by multiple punches directed at the dog’s body. The severity and duration of the attack were emphasized by the fiscal depute, Calum Thompson, who stated that the assault was not a fleeting incident but a sustained act of violence.

Thompson further detailed that the dog was thrown against the ground at least eight times and punched at least six times during the attack. Eyewitnesses present at the scene observed Brady’s behavior and noted that he appeared to be under the influence of substances at the time, which may have contributed to his aggressive actions.

Despite the ferocity of the assault, the dog managed to escape without sustaining serious injuries. The incident drew significant concern from the community and animal welfare advocates, highlighting the need for accountability in cases of animal cruelty.

Brady’s legal representative, Ian Woodward-Nutt, expressed his client’s remorse and described him as a full-time driver who was “utterly horrified” by his own conduct. Woodward-Nutt explained that Brady struggles with mental health issues and substance abuse, which he claimed contributed to the incident. He emphasized that Brady has grown up caring for dogs and was deeply distressed by his actions.

In an effort to demonstrate his remorse, Brady took immediate steps following the incident, including re-homing the dog through a local animal charity. Woodward-Nutt stressed that the attack was entirely out of character for Brady, who has a lifelong history of loving and caring for animals. The solicitor also noted that Brady had no recollection of the events and that there was no significant injury to the dog.

During sentencing, Sheriff Grant Hutchison decided against imposing a custodial sentence. Instead, he opted for a community-based punishment, placing Brady under social work supervision for a year and ordering him to complete 60 hours of unpaid community service. Additionally, Brady was banned from owning any animals for two years, with the restriction having expired in July 2021.

Sheriff Hutchison commented on the nature of the attack, describing it as “frenzied,” and expressed the importance of supervision to ensure Brady’s mental health stabilizes and improves. The court’s decision aimed to balance accountability with the opportunity for rehabilitation, emphasizing that this case serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health support and responsible pet ownership in the community of Bucksburn and Aberdeen.
