GRANDAD CAUGHT GROOMING TEENAGERS ON GRINDR AND SNAPCHAT GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE
A grandad signed up for Grindr but it all ended in tears in court.Peter Bellfield, aged 61, began using the dating app and Snapchat to groom what he believed were teenage boys.
He attempted to solicit naked pictures from five youths but was caught in an undercover police sting.
Despite arrest, he continued his behavior and was found to have engaged with multiple Snapchat accounts purportedly representing teenage boys.
Bellfield contacted a police-decoy account on Grindr on October 11, 2022, asking about his previous encounters with boys and for pictures, even moving the conversation to Snapchat where he sent explicit images and asked for more.
Investigations uncovered that Bellfield, now living in Milton Keynes, had also engaged in lewd chats with four other Snapchat users claiming to be teenagers.
He asked for explicit pictures, discussed his sexual interests, and asked for pictures of boys' genitalia.
He sat in court with no previous convictions and admitted to six counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.
His defense highlighted his depression diagnosis since 2007, his move to Liverpool during the COVID lockdown feeling lonely, and his remorse and efforts to seek professional help.
Despite the serious nature of his offenses, the judge sentenced him to a two-year suspended imprisonment, 120 hours of unpaid work, and a 10-year sex offenders register order.
The judge recognized Bellfield's age and previous good character as mitigating factors, emphasizing his remorse and steps taken to prevent future offenses.
