PETER ANDERSON SHETLAND TINGWALL HORRIFIC ABUSE REVEALED
In a disturbing case brought before Lerwick Sheriff Court, Peter Anderson, a 36-year-old man from Shetland, has been charged with multiple acts of assault involving two teenage victims. The incidents, which spanned over the course of 2022, involved physical abuse that escalated from what initially appeared to be playful altercations to serious acts of violence.According to court records, Anderson’s victims were both teenagers, with the boy turning 16 during the period of abuse. The court heard that Anderson, who was in a relationship with the mother of the boy, engaged in violent episodes that included punching the boy and striking him with a broom handle. In addition to these assaults, Anderson used a cat-of-nine-tails, a type of whip with multiple lashes, which he wielded during these episodes. The whip was described in court as having a “garish colouring,” adding a disturbing visual element to the case.
The female victim, also involved in the same relationship, suffered similar treatment, being hit with a broom handle and whipped with the same instrument. The prosecutor, Duncan MacKenzie, emphasized that these incidents were fueled by tensions within the relationships, which led to what initially seemed like harmless “playfighting” escalating into actual violence. Despite the prolonged nature of these assaults, the injuries sustained by both victims were relatively minor, primarily consisting of bruising. Each victim was assaulted only once, but the abuse persisted over a lengthy period.
The case came to light in January 2023 when the teenage boy reached out to social workers, seeking alternative housing due to the unbearable situation at home with Anderson. This plea for help prompted a police investigation that ultimately led to Anderson’s arrest and the current charges being brought against him.
During the court proceedings, Sheriff Ian Cruickshank inquired about the whip used in the assaults. The description of the weapon as a “cat-of-nine-tails with garish colouring” painted a vivid picture of the disturbing nature of the abuse. Anderson’s defense attorney, John McLeod, argued that the relationship between the boy and his mother had deteriorated significantly, and that “events had moved on” since Anderson was no longer involved with the mother of the first complainant. McLeod also described the environment among those involved as “toxic,” suggesting a complex and troubled background to the case.
The hearing was adjourned until March 19, allowing for the preparation of reports and further proceedings. The case has cast a spotlight on the troubling dynamics within the household in Tingwall, Shetland, and the serious consequences of unchecked violence within familial relationships.
