PAUL WHITE FROM CRIEFF SENTENCED FOR HEINOUS SEXUAL OFFENSES IN PERTHSHIRE AND EDINBURGH

In December 2015, Paul White, a man with a disturbing history of sexual offenses, was sentenced to a decade behind bars after a High Court in Edinburgh found him guilty of multiple heinous crimes involving young children. The court heard that White, who previously resided in Rintoul Avenue, Crieff, Perthshire, had committed a series of sexual assaults spanning over a decade, targeting vulnerable young girls during leisure activities and in secluded locations across Perthshire and Edinburgh.

Judge Kenneth Maciver QC condemned White’s actions, emphasizing the severity and cruelty of his offenses. The judge stated, "All three were in your company in the context of swimming or related leisure activity," highlighting that White exploited settings such as swimming pools and hotel complexes to carry out his crimes. The court detailed that White had abused three girls, with two of these victims subjected to rape, including one in a changing cubicle at a Perth leisure centre.

White, aged 54 at the time of sentencing, had earlier denied all charges of indecency and rape during his trial. Despite his denials, the evidence presented was overwhelming. The court established that between 1987 and 1990, White molested a girl aged between four and six at Perth Leisure Centre and the Crieff Hydro Hotel Complex. His misconduct included molestation in the swimming pool and attempts to enter dressing cubicles while the girl was changing.

Further allegations revealed that between 1990 and 1992, White indecently assaulted another girl aged six or seven, both at Perth Leisure Centre and during a car trip. The court also heard that he took this girl to a wooded area at Kinoull Hill in Perth, where he raped her. The timeline extended to 1997-1999, during which White raped a third girl aged between nine and ten in a changing cubicle at Perth Leisure Centre.

Throughout the trial, White maintained his innocence, with his defense solicitor advocate Iain Paterson asserting that there was no truth to the allegations. White responded to questions about the accusations with a firm denial, stating, “No, none whatsoever.” During the proceedings, White’s failure to appear in court led to a warrant for his arrest, revealing that he had attempted suicide and was found in a distressed state when police detained him.

Medical assessments were conducted to evaluate White’s mental health, but the court was informed that there was no suggestion of a mental health disposal in his case. It was also noted that White had a history of self-harm. Following his conviction, White was placed on the sex offenders’ register, marking a significant step in the justice process.

Earlier in October 2015, White’s pattern of abuse was further detailed during a separate trial, where it was revealed that he had sexually assaulted two young girls and another victim over a period of 12 years, from August 1987 to April 1999. These assaults took place at various locations in Perthshire, including swimming pool cubicles and secluded outdoor spots such as Kinoull Hill. The victims ranged in age from four to ten years old, with White playing games like “sharks” in the pool before carrying out his attacks.

White’s attempts to evade justice included missing court dates and attempting to take his own life. During his nine-day trial, he was on bail but failed to appear at one point, prompting police to arrest him after they responded to his attempted suicide. It was only after the other victims, who could not be named for legal reasons, bravely came forward and spoke to police that White was finally brought to justice.

Following his conviction, the court scheduled sentencing for November 17, with White being remanded in custody and his case deferred to allow for further reports on his character. The case underscores the long-lasting impact of White’s crimes on his victims and highlights the importance of perseverance in seeking justice for such heinous acts.
