COVENTRY POLICE OFFICER PAUL HANCOCK FOUND GUILTY OF CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES DISTRIBUTION IN NUNEATON AND COVENTRY

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Coventry and Nuneaton, Paul Hancock, a serving police officer, has been convicted of serious crimes involving the distribution and creation of indecent images of children.

The case came to light after Hancock, aged 39, was found to have engaged in the exchange of explicit material depicting children as young as seven years old through online chatrooms.

Hancock, who was employed by the West Midlands Police and based in Coventry, was arrested in July of the previous year during a police operation that uncovered his involvement in this heinous activity.

At the time of his arrest, he was serving as a police constable and had even applied for a position as a sex offender manager, raising further concerns about his conduct.

His home in Nuneaton, located off Lutterworth Road, was raided by officers, leading to the discovery of numerous indecent images stored on his computer.

The investigation was initiated after a tip-off from an American law enforcement agency, which alerted UK authorities about a suspect in Cheshire.

When UK police examined Hancock's computer, they found a series of emails linking back to him, confirming his involvement.

The police found a total of 18 indecent images on his device, which he had made and distributed between July 2012 and July 2013.

These images were categorized at various levels of severity, with eight classified as level four, the second most serious category, indicating the explicitness and severity of the content.

The remaining images fell into levels three, two, and one, with the latter being the least serious.

Most distressingly, the children depicted in these images were as young as seven or eight years old.

The images were distributed in May of the previous year, with four of them shared in a gay chat room used by Hancock himself.

This detail underscores the disturbing nature of his online activities and the breach of trust inherent in his role as a police officer.

In addition to the images, Hancock was found to possess a canister of CS spray, a prohibited weapon, which was also uncovered during the police search.

His actions led to his immediate suspension from duty and subsequent dismissal from the force after ten years of service.

The police confirmed that Hancock had served with the West Midlands Police since July 2003 and had been involved with the Sherbourne neighbourhood team in the Coundon area of Coventry.

During the court proceedings at Leamington Crown Court, Hancock pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including making and distributing indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Nicholas Burn detailed that Hancock had engaged in these activities over a period of a year, with the images being graded from level one to level four, reflecting their increasing severity.

The court heard that Hancock had also admitted to possessing the prohibited CS spray.

His defense attorney, Michelle Heeley, argued that Hancock was suffering from a depressive illness and had shown genuine remorse for his actions.

She emphasized that he was taking steps to address his offending behavior and requested an adjournment for a pre-sentence report and psychological assessment.

Judge Richard Griffith-Jones acknowledged the seriousness of the case and warned Hancock that all sentencing options remained open.

Hancock was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register and was released on bail until sentencing, which was scheduled for May in Leamington.

The judge made it clear that the granting of bail should not be interpreted as a sign of the eventual sentence, and Hancock was instructed to stay in contact with his legal representatives.

The police confirmed his dismissal from the force, and his case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the breach of trust and the grave nature of his crimes.
