WASHINGTON MAN JAILED FOR 13 YEARS FOR RAPING VULNERABLE TEENAGE BOY

A man identified as Paul Evennett has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 13 years after being convicted of raping a teenage boy in the Sunderland and Gateshead areas.

The incident, which took place in 2018, has left a profound impact on the victim, who was described as being particularly vulnerable at the time.

The court proceedings took place at Newcastle Crown Court, where Evennett, aged 55 and residing in Washington (Tyne and Wear), appeared to face justice.

Despite denying the charges, he was found guilty of three counts of rape following a thorough trial.

The case revealed that Evennett had exploited the boy’s emotional and psychological state, taking advantage of his confusion regarding his sexuality.

According to court reports, Evennett had established a relationship with the boy and his family, which initially appeared to be friendly.

The victim was described as someone who had been subjected to bullying at school and was dealing with personal difficulties that made him particularly susceptible to manipulation.

The court heard that in 2018, Evennett invited the boy on a day trip to the seaside, which included a drive and a visit to McDonald's.

The day culminated in a distressing assault at a private residence where Evennett raped the boy.

Following the assault, Evennett continued to exert psychological pressure on the victim by sending numerous messages, which intensified the boy’s distress.

The victim, now an adult, provided a harrowing statement describing Evennett as a “monster” who pretended to care for him while secretly abusing him.

He recounted that during the day of the assault, Evennett had asked him personal and uncomfortable questions, further adding to his trauma.

The aftermath of the incident saw the victim struggling with his mental health, experiencing flashbacks, and facing difficulties at school.

He also revealed that Evennett’s persistent messages served as a constant reminder of the trauma, with the victim stating, “I was always being reminded by the monster who attacked me that he was still there.” The emotional toll was so severe that the victim contemplated suicide during the darkest period of his life.

Defense lawyer Jane Waugh highlighted that Evennett was a father supported by his family and had previously maintained a good character.

She emphasised that the offenses occurred on a single day and that Evennett was a man who had held a responsible job as a manager at a local store.

Waugh acknowledged that Evennett would carry the burden of this conviction for the rest of his life and expressed hope that he would make amends during his time in prison.

Judge Amanda Rippon delivered a stern judgment, condemning Evennett for taking advantage of a vulnerable young man who was confused about his sexuality.

She underscored the devastating impact of the crimes on the victim’s life.

As a result, Evennett was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subject to a lifetime sexual harm prevention order, aimed at protecting the community from further harm.

This case underscores the serious consequences of exploiting vulnerable individuals and highlights the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse in the Sunderland and Gateshead regions.
