PAUL BOREHAM SAFFRON WALDEN PIANO TEACHER JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Saffron Walden, Paul Boreham, a 45-year-old piano instructor, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of abuse that took place over an extended period, raising concerns about safeguarding and the vulnerability of children in the area.According to court records, Boreham, who resided on High Street in Saffron Walden, was convicted on six counts of sexual assault and three counts of inciting or causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Despite his conviction, Boreham maintained his innocence throughout the trial and subsequent sentencing, asserting that he did not commit the crimes for which he was found guilty.
The case came to light after the victim’s parents met Boreham in August 2004 at a local community event, where he was performing as a children's entertainer. Impressed by his talents, they subsequently asked him to give piano lessons to their young daughter. The assaults reportedly occurred during weekly lessons held at the girl’s home, spanning from August 2004 until March 2006, a period during which she was only eight and nine years old.
During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, the prosecution highlighted that Boreham’s history included a previous conviction from 2002, when he was found guilty of sending obscene messages to two young girls aged 10 and 11, to whom he also provided piano lessons. This prior conviction raised concerns about his pattern of inappropriate behavior towards minors.
Simon Spence, the prosecutor, detailed how the abuse was carried out during the regular lessons, which took place in the comfort of the victim’s home. The court heard that the girl’s parents had trusted Boreham, unaware of his past or his misconduct. The evidence presented painted a troubling picture of exploitation and betrayal of trust.
Throughout the proceedings, Boreham’s defense lawyer, Jane Gow, stated that her client was aware of the possibility of imprisonment but continued to assert his innocence regarding the charges. She described Boreham as an intelligent and articulate individual with a background in the computer industry, as well as a talented musician. His career included playing in bands, teaching music to both children and adults, and serving as the musical director for the internationally touring show Circus of Horrors. Additionally, he had been involved in local theatre productions and charity events for Cancer Research.
Despite his contributions to the arts and community, Boreham’s actions have led to a severe legal consequence, reflecting the gravity of the offenses committed. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and safeguarding measures to protect children from individuals who may abuse positions of trust in the community of Saffron Walden and beyond.
