ANTHONY KAMAU SENTENCED IN SAFFRON WALDEN FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILDREN
In a significant case that has shocked the community of Saffron Walden, Anthony Kamau, a 51-year-old man, was brought to justice for heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of three young girls. The incident, which spanned over a decade, culminated in a court hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, 14 June, where Kamau was formally sentenced to nine years and eight months behind bars.Kamau, who previously resided on Winstanley Road in Saffron Walden, was arrested in February 2019 by the specialized Essex Police Quest Team. This unit is tasked with investigating historical sexual offences against children, and their diligent inquiries uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse. It was revealed that Kamau had subjected three girls to sexual abuse over a period of approximately ten years, from 2006 to 2017.
The investigation uncovered multiple charges against Kamau, including two counts of sexual assault by touching, three counts of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity, and two counts of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity. These charges were the result of a comprehensive investigation that involved interviews, evidence collection, and forensic analysis.
Despite the severity of the allegations and the seizure of his passport to prevent him from fleeing the country, Kamau took the drastic step of fleeing the UK before his initial court appearance. His disappearance prompted a coordinated effort by Essex Police and other agencies to locate him. The search led authorities to Nairobi, where Kamau was found and subsequently extradited back to the United Kingdom.
Following his return, Kamau faced further legal proceedings. On Monday, 3rd April, he was found guilty of all the charges brought against him. During the court hearing, he was also charged with breaching his court bail conditions. The judge sentenced him to nine years and eight months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
In addition to his prison sentence, authorities have made it clear that Kamau will face restrictions upon his release. He will not be permitted to return to the UK after serving his sentence, underscoring the serious nature of his offences and the community’s desire to prevent any future harm.
This case has brought to light the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the ongoing need to protect vulnerable children from sexual exploitation and abuse. The victims, who have shown remarkable bravery in speaking out, continue to receive support as the community processes the impact of this disturbing case.
