PAUL ASHTON FROM SUSSEX CAUGHT WITH OVER 5,000 CHILD PORN IMAGES IN LONG-TERM CRIMINAL HIDEOUT

In a significant case highlighting persistent efforts by law enforcement to combat child exploitation, Paul Ashton, a 59-year-old man from Sussex, has been sentenced to prison after being found in possession of more than 5,000 indecent images of children. Ashton, who was known to have no fixed address, had managed to evade authorities for nearly eight years following his initial arrest in 2004.

His criminal activities came to light after Sussex Police raided his residence in Bracklesham Bay. During the operation, officers seized various computer devices, which upon analysis revealed a disturbing collection of indecent images stored on hard drives and USB sticks. Despite being released on bail while investigations continued, Ashton failed to appear for subsequent court proceedings and subsequently disappeared from the public record.

It was only after nearly four years of evasion that Ashton was finally located. His arrest was triggered by a tip-off from an anonymous informant who had seen his photograph on the Crimestoppers Most Wanted list. The tip led South Wales Police to track him down in South Wales, where he was living under an assumed name. During his arrest, further computer equipment was recovered, containing additional indecent images of children.

Following his apprehension, Ashton appeared before Chichester Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to possessing over 5,000 indecent images of minors. The court sentenced him to 30 months in prison on Thursday, March 1. The case underscores the message from law enforcement agencies that efforts to bring offenders to justice can span years but will ultimately succeed.

Detective Constable David Midgley of West Sussex CID emphasized the importance of community vigilance and anonymous reporting, stating, “This case highlights how an individual’s criminality will catch up with them – whether it’s weeks, months or years later. Credit must go to the anonymous informant to Crimestoppers who became suspicious and rang in. Thanks to their actions, Ashton was finally brought to justice after spending nearly eight years in hiding.”

He further added, “Ashton recognizes that in each image, a child was a victim of crime. The length of the sentence demonstrates how the justice system will punish those who download indecent images of children.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Ashton was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and will be required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community from potential harm.
