PATRICK FAGAN FROM DOWNPATRICK SENTENCED FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS OF CHILD ABUSE IN CO DOWN CHURCH
In a case that has shocked the community of Downpatrick and the wider Co Down area, Patrick Fagan, a 66-year-old man, was sentenced to two years in prison for a prolonged history of child abuse spanning nearly three decades.Fagan, who served as a caretaker at a local Catholic church in Downpatrick, was found guilty of abusing young children over an extended period, with the crimes taking place within the church premises where he was entrusted with responsibilities.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Anthony Hart addressed Fagan directly, acknowledging his guilty pleas and his age as mitigating factors.
The judge stated that, had it not been for these considerations, the sentence might have been significantly harsher.
The court heard that Fagan’s actions had caused lasting harm to his victims, and the community was left grappling with the betrayal of trust by someone who was supposed to be a caretaker and a figure of moral authority within the church.
Fagan’s residence was identified as The Quoile Fold in Downpatrick, where he has lived for many years.
