PATRICK COLLINS OF COBH, COUNTY CORK, SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CO CORK

In March 2003, a significant legal case unfolded involving Patrick Collins, a 58-year-old former sailor residing in Bellmont Place, Cobh, County Cork. Collins was convicted of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old boy, a crime that has garnered considerable attention due to its connection to a broader pattern of abuse within the community.

Collins's criminal history is extensive and disturbing. He is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence for the abuse of four other young boys, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior that spans several years. His involvement in a paedophile sex ring operating in Cobh has been confirmed by Gardaí, the Irish police force, who state that he is the third individual from this ring to be incarcerated.

During the court proceedings, Collins was described as a serial abuser, a characterization that underscores the severity and repeated nature of his offenses. His criminal record includes a previous conviction from February 2001, when he was sentenced to 15 years for the abuse and rape of young boys aged between six and twelve. This sentence was later reduced to ten years on appeal, but it remains a stark reminder of his long-standing predatory conduct.

At the Circuit Criminal Court in Cork, Collins pleaded guilty to two counts of indecently assaulting the seven-year-old victim. The young man, now in his late teens, came forward in November 2000 to report the abuse, which had a profound and traumatic impact on his life, as detailed during the court proceedings.

Sergeant John Quinn provided testimony indicating that Gardaí investigations revealed Collins's deep involvement in a paedophile ring operating within Cobh. The investigation uncovered that Collins's abusive actions spanned over three decades, illustrating a disturbing pattern of exploitation and misconduct.

It was also noted that Collins is the third member of this criminal network to be imprisoned. Two others are currently serving sentences of six and two years, respectively, while additional members are under active Gardaí investigation, suggesting a widespread and organized operation.

Judge Sean Ó Donnabháin sentenced Collins to an additional six months on top of his existing ten-year term. The judge also ordered that Collins be placed under the supervision of the Probation and Welfare Service for four years following his release. Furthermore, Collins will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities post-incarceration.
