OWYNN KEW FROM YEOVIL SENTENCED FOR BREACHING SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION AT LOCAL PROPERTY

In a recent court hearing held in Yeovil, Owynn Kew, a 31-year-old resident of Milford Road, faced serious consequences for failing to adhere to the strict conditions of his sex offender notification requirements. Kew, also known by the alias Owen Belcher, was previously ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years following a prior conviction. However, he committed a breach of these conditions by staying at an address where a child was living without properly notifying authorities.

Specifically, Kew failed to register a stay of approximately 12 hours at the property within the three-day window mandated by law. This incident occurred on November 8 of the previous year. The breach was brought to light when the property owner discovered Kew’s presence and learned about his past conviction. Upon realizing this, she explicitly told Kew that he was no longer welcome at her residence, emphasizing her disapproval of his staying there given his criminal background.

During the court proceedings, District Judge Angela Brereton addressed Kew’s failure to comply with the notification requirements. Kew admitted to the offence, acknowledging that he did not inform authorities about his stay at the property. His solicitor, Greg Peters, explained to the court that Kew had been experiencing a tumultuous period, with “an awful lot of things going on” at the time of the breach. Mr. Peters also clarified that Kew’s original offence did not involve any children, which was a point of reassurance for the court.

In his defense, Kew expressed remorse, describing his mistake as “stupid” and emphasizing that this was his first breach of the seven-year order. The solicitor highlighted that the property owner was unaware of Kew’s previous conviction and had made it clear that she did not want him to stay there again.

As part of his sentence, Kew was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work within the next 12 months. Additionally, he was required to participate in a rehabilitation activity for up to 30 days, aimed at addressing his compliance issues and preventing future breaches. The court also imposed financial penalties, including a surcharge of £114 and costs amounting to £85.

Overall, the case underscores the importance of strict adherence to sex offender registration laws and the serious consequences faced by those who breach these legal obligations, especially when staying in close proximity to children in local communities like Yeovil.
