LIMERICK MAN OWEN O’BRIEN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS FOR VILE CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN LIMERICK

In a case that has shocked the community of Limerick, Owen O’Brien, a 43-year-old man from Eden Terrace on North Circular Road, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl over a span of five years.

The court heard that O’Brien pleaded guilty to six sample charges of sexually assaulting the girl, with the incidents occurring between January 1, 2002, and March 31, 2007. All of these offenses took place within various locations across Limerick city, where the victim was between the ages of six and twelve at the time.

O’Brien, a qualified accountant by profession, was not publicly identified until the charges came to light. It was only after the abuse was reported in June 2011 that he made admissions to Gardaí, the Irish police force, revealing the extent of his misconduct.

During the sentencing hearing at Limerick Circuit Court, Judge Tom O’Donnell acknowledged the bravery of the victim, now 18 years old, for coming forward and providing a detailed account of her ordeal. The judge emphasized that her courage in making a formal complaint was commendable, especially given the traumatic nature of her experiences.

Judge O’Donnell described the abuse as a prolonged and calculated campaign of grooming and exploitation. He stated that O’Brien had systematically targeted the young girl, “stolen her innocence,” and subjected her to a pattern of sexual abuse that was both cold and premeditated. The court was told that the offenses involved inappropriate touching, masturbation, and simulated intercourse, occurring two or three times weekly during the period of abuse.

The victim’s impact statement was read aloud in court, revealing that she continues to suffer from nightmares and flashbacks as a result of the trauma inflicted upon her. She has also taken steps to change her identity and appearance in an effort to distance herself from her past abuse.

Judge O’Donnell described the nature of the crimes as “vile,” particularly considering the young age of the victim. Despite O’Brien’s remorse and his participation in a rehabilitation program, the judge emphasized that the severity of the offenses warranted a custodial sentence. Consequently, he sentenced O’Brien to five years in prison and ordered that he remain under supervision by Probation Services for three years after his release.

Furthermore, O’Brien’s name has been placed on the register of sexual offenders indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from future harm.
