OWEN HAUGHIAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY IN LERWICK AFTER SEXUAL OFFENCES AND COURT BEHAVIOR
A 32-year-old man named Owen Haughian, from the Hoofields area of Lerwick, has been remanded in custody following his admission to two separate sexual offences and subsequent disruptive behavior in the court building.Haughian pleaded guilty to two sex crimes—one on August 1st and another on January 24th—during his court appearance today.
Procurator fiscal Duncan MacKenzie stated that Haughian committed these crimes after befriending the girls via social media.
The case was initially scheduled for trial yesterday, but Haughian arrived late and caused a disturbance outside the courtroom.
It was also reported that he had consumed a bottle of vodka prior to attending, which led to his being refused entry due to his intoxicated state.
As a result, he was arrested at the scene.
This morning in court, Haughian appeared contrite but admitted to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, shouting, swearing, and causing a disturbance while witnesses, including children, were waiting in a nearby room.
Haughian also admitted to behaving disorderly.
His sentencing was deferred until July 23rd, so social workers can prepare background reports.
He is to be dealt with by Sheriff Philip Mann at that time.
Defence lawyer Tommy Allan requested bail on Haughian’s behalf, expressing concern that his client could lose his job and tenancy if remanded.
However, prosecutor MacKenzie opposed bail, citing Haughian’s prior convictions, which include a number of serious offences.
MacKenzie emphasized that the court had limited discretion due to the gravity of the charges, stating, “The situation for him is that he has backed the court into a corner and left the court without any discretion.” Honorary Sheriff Sandy Cluness responded to Haughian’s solicitor, reiterating the seriousness of the case and stating, “I’ve listened carefully to what your solicitor has said, but these are serious charges so serious that sheriff Mann has decided to deal with them himself.” In light of the circumstances and the seriousness of the allegations, Sheriff Cluness deferred sentencing until July 23rd and remanded Haughian in custody.
