MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT ATTACK WITH PAVING SLAB IN THETFORD
A man who hit a woman over the head with part of a broken paving slab has been jailed for 10 years.
In the early hours of January 9, Owen Coppins, 25, of no fixed abode, entered a business in King Street, Thetford.
He threw part of a broken paving slab at a member of staff, who ducked and ran away.
The victim narrowly escaped injury, but the slab seriously damaged the wall.
Coppins left the premises and, minutes later, approached a woman he did not know from behind.
He hit her over the head with the same slab and fled the scene, leaving her on the floor with a deep cut.
Officers arrested Coppins two hours later in Bridge Street and took him to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
He was later charged and remanded into custody.
Coppins appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on December 4, having previously pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent, assault and criminal damage.
Following sentencing, PC Jacob Reeder said: “Coppins set out that evening wanting to hurt someone.
He was intent on being violent and committed two random attacks which have had a lasting impact on his victims.
“I hope that this sentence offers some comfort to those victims, knowing he will be off the streets for some time.” The attacker, Owen Coppins, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for grievous bodily harm with intent and related charges, reflecting his violent attacks that caused lasting trauma to his victims.
