ORAN O'NEILL FROM BALLYMENA SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN GALASHIELS, SCOTLAND
A man identified as Oran O'Neill, aged 20 and originally from Ballymena, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of abducting and raping a woman in the town of Galashiels, located in the south of Scotland.The court heard that the assault took place on the 15th of July last year, when O'Neill lured his victim to a secluded garden area at Stirling Place.
During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, O'Neill maintained his innocence, denying the charges of rape.
However, the jury found him guilty based on the evidence presented.
The judge, Gordon Liddle, addressed O'Neill directly, stating, "Galashiels is a safer place for young women to go out at night," emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
The court was told that the victim was in a vulnerable state at the time of the attack.
She was found sitting in a doorway, intoxicated, when O'Neill encountered her.
The judge highlighted that she was in a compromised position, and O'Neill exploited her vulnerability.
Judge Liddle remarked, "She was vulnerable and you took advantage of that," condemning O'Neill's actions.
According to court proceedings, O'Neill initially offered to escort the woman, which she accepted, trusting him.
However, her trust was betrayed when she attempted to leave the situation.
O'Neill caught up with her, physically lifted her, and carried her into a garden area.
There, he committed the assault while she was unconscious.
The attack continued even after she regained consciousness, causing further trauma.
The judge described the incident as "a young woman's nightmare," and referenced a victim impact statement that revealed the lasting effects of the assault.
The victim has since become more withdrawn and suspicious when in social settings, a change attributed to the trauma she endured.
In sentencing, Judge Liddle emphasized that the punishment reflected the heinous nature of the crime.
He also ordered that O'Neill be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, underscoring the severity of his actions and the impact on the victim's life.
