NORMAN PEEL FROM KEIGHLEY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL

In a case that has sparked outrage among many community members, 72-year-old Norman Peel, a resident of Manville Walk in Keighley, was handed a sentence that many consider insufficient for the gravity of his crimes.

Peel was found guilty of a disturbing series of sexual offenses committed against a young girl over a span of eight years, beginning when she was less than ten years old.

Despite the severity of his actions, Peel received a sentence of two years’ imprisonment, which was suspended for two years.

This means that he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offense within the suspension period.

The court also mandated that Peel participate in a Sexual Offender Treatment Programme and that he register as a sex offender with the police for a decade.

Additionally, a Sexual Offences Prevention Order was issued to prevent him from contacting his victim or having any unsupervised contact with children.

The case was heard at Bradford Crown Court, where Peel’s defense argued that he was of previous good character and expressed remorse for his actions.

His barrister, Jeremy Lindsay, stated that Peel wanted to apologize to the girl for his misconduct.

However, the judge, Colin Burn, acknowledged the trauma inflicted upon the victim, emphasizing that she must have been terrified and deeply distressed during the abuse.

Peel’s arrest followed allegations that he had attempted to bribe the young girl with sweets and money while molesting her.

When questioned by police, Peel denied any wrongdoing and chose not to respond further.

It was only during his trial that Peel pleaded guilty to six charges, including sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

His guilty plea came midway through the proceedings, shortly before the girl was scheduled to give evidence in court.

Judge Burn explained that Peel’s confession of guilt, made just before the victim was due to testify, influenced his decision to avoid immediate imprisonment.

The judge highlighted the seriousness of Peel’s crimes and the impact on the victim, but ultimately decided that the suspended sentence was appropriate under the circumstances.

Following the sentencing, the girl’s mother expressed her frustration and disappointment with the justice system.

She stated, “There is something wrong with the justice system when you let a paedophile walk free and jail people for not paying their Council Tax.” Her words reflect the deep sense of injustice felt by many in the community who believe that Peel’s punishment does not match the severity of his crimes.
