NOEL RYAN SENTENCED IN NEWBRIDGE FOR DECADES-OLD INDECENT ASSAULTS

In April 2016, a man from Newbridge named Noel Ryan was sentenced to prison after being convicted of multiple counts of indecent assault spanning several years. The case, heard at Naas Circuit Court, revealed a disturbing history of abuse involving three women who were victims of Ryan's misconduct. Ryan, aged 65 at the time, is a married man and father of five children, with his residence listed as 2671 Dara Park, Newbridge. The victims—Evelyn Poole, Yvonne Murphy, and Michelle English—chose to waive their right to anonymity, allowing their identities to be publicly disclosed and the details of their ordeals to be fully reported.

Yvonne Murphy, aged 47, and Evelyn Poole, aged 49, are related to Ryan as niece and cousin, respectively. Michelle English, aged 39, was a childhood friend of Ryan. The allegations date back to the late 1970s and the 1980s, with incidents occurring at various locations including Ballycane, Naas; Dara Park, Newbridge; and Pairc Mhuire, Newbridge. The court heard that there were approximately 35 incidents involving Michelle English between 1985 and 1988, 23 incidents against Yvonne Murphy from 1980 to 1982, and five incidents involving Evelyn Poole from 1979 to 1982. All three women resided in the same row of houses at Dara Park, Newbridge, which added a layer of betrayal given their close proximity and familial ties.

Garda Wendy Doyle provided testimony, stating that statements from the victims were collected in March 2010. She recounted a specific incident where Evelyn Poole was asked to babysit for an aunt at Pairc Mhuire. After putting the child to bed, Poole was in bed when Ryan entered and proceeded to sexually assault her by placing his hand beneath her undergarments. Poole revealed that the abuse was uncovered when she confided in her cousin about the incident.

Garda Doyle further explained that Yvonne Murphy, who was also a niece by marriage to Ryan, was assaulted on 21 occasions. These assaults occurred at locations including Lacken View, Naas, and Dara Park, Newbridge. Murphy described how Ryan would enter her room at Lacken View and place his hand on her private parts. She detailed a pattern of ongoing abuse, with some incidents involving Ryan rubbing against her, and her efforts to push him away as she grew older.

Michelle English's testimony painted a particularly disturbing picture. She was the daughter of a neighbor who played with Ryan’s daughter. Michelle was assaulted in a shed where Ryan kept pigeons, and she recounted being molested while sitting at a kitchen table with Ryan and his family. She also described an incident in a bedroom where Ryan exposed himself and asked her to rub his penis, and another where he assaulted her using his tongue. Michelle reported these incidents to her mother, and medical examinations confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

The victims came forward in 2010, and Ryan initially denied the allegations. The court heard that all three women had suffered significant emotional and psychological trauma. Yvonne Murphy, in her victim impact statement, disclosed that she had been treated for depression and had experienced verbal abuse from Ryan’s family in public and when she had children. She recounted that she was just nine years old when the abuse began and that she moved out of her home at age 15. Murphy explained that she had difficulty dressing in a way that attracted attention, often wearing baggy jeans, and that her mental health issues had severely affected her relationships, leading to a breakup.

Michelle English also shared her struggles, revealing that she had suffered from severe depression and panic disorder, relying on alcohol to cope with her trauma. She described how she had to meet Ryan daily for 24 years at Dara Park, beginning her abuse at age 10. English expressed feelings of silence and isolation, stating that she only recently began to understand that her suffering was not her fault and that her life had been profoundly impacted.

Similarly, Evelyn Poole spoke about her ongoing mental health struggles, including anxiety, nightmares, depression, and low self-esteem. She revealed that she had attempted to take her own life and was haunted by shame over her experiences. Poole shared that she had asked her GP if she was likely to abuse her own child while pregnant, illustrating the deep scars left by the abuse. She also mentioned her efforts to train as an addiction counselor and psychotherapist, seeking to turn her pain into a form of healing.

The court heard that Ryan was born in Kilkenny before moving in with his brother in Newbridge. Judge Gerard Griffin addressed the court, emphasizing the importance of considering what sentence might have been appropriate at the time of the offenses, as well as the nature and impact of the crimes. He described the offenses as mid-range but acknowledged that some cases of this kind are more severe. The judge condemned Ryan for breaching the trust placed in him and for stealing the innocence of his victims. He dismissed Ryan’s claim that there was a conspiracy against him as “groundless.”

In sentencing, Judge Griffin imposed a total of 14 one-year sentences and 49 sentences of six years each. He suspended the final 18 months of each sentence for five years, provided Ryan agreed to be of good behavior and keep the peace. All sentences were to run concurrently and were backdated to April 15, 2016, the date of his conviction. Additionally, Ryan was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
