UNSTOPPABLE FIFE PAEDOPHILE LESLIE RUTHERFORD BACK IN COURT FOR MORE IMAGES OF CHILDREN
In November 2025, a social worker and detective examined a convicted individual from Fife, known for having collected over 1.3 million disturbing images of child abuse.During their investigation, they discovered photographs of children’s swimwear stored on his tablet.
Leslie Rutherford, who was battling cancer, was under surveillance following his convictions in 2021 and 2024 for hoarding unsettling material depicting child abuse.
Despite claiming to police and social workers that his device was merely a book, the existence of illegal content was eventually uncovered.
The 70-year-old was consequently placed back on the sex offenders register and is currently awaiting sentencing.
He attended Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court carrying a plastic bag containing medical prescriptions.
At the court, Rutherford pleaded guilty to producing or possessing illicit images from July 2023 to October 2024.
A brief search of his home in Kirkcaldy—where he has lived since August 2022—was conducted with his approval on October 29 of the previous year.
During this search, a tablet in a protective case on his bed and a mobile phone on his bedside table were observed.
Initially, Rutherford insisted the device was a book.
However, authorities found over 500 illegal files, some depicting naked children in baths and others showing semi-naked kids in swimwear.
Investigators identified that Rutherford had specifically searched for children’s swimwear online and visited various shopping sites.
He has been serving a community sentence since his first court appearance on June 6 this year.
The court was told that for each of his two similar previous convictions, he received three-year community payback orders.
His solicitor, Graham Inch, stated that Rutherford was cooperating with the supervision.
Sheriff Robert More noted that Rutherford’s repeated offences complicated his sentencing, especially considering his two similar past convictions.
The court placed him on the sex offenders register again and kept him on bail until pre-sentence reports are completed.
A motion was also made to seize his electronic devices involved in the offending.
Rutherford’s disturbing criminal history dates back decades: in 2021, he was first convicted of accumulating 373,000 child abuse images over more than twenty years.
His home in Edinburgh was raided, and it was reported his marriage had ended.
Last year, he appeared again at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to admit possessing over a million more illicit images after relocating to Fife.
The vast quantity of material led police to halt efforts to classify the graphic content.
Earlier, in September 2021, Rutherford, then aged 66, was found to have amassed over 373,000 images of child abuse spanning 20 years.
Police seized multiple devices during a raid at his Newbridge home, with hundreds classified as the most severe category, alongside 180 Category A videos.
He admitted to possessing child abuse images from March 11, 1999, to September 7, last year.
Sheriff Nigel Ross deferred sentencing until next month for further reports, placing Rutherford on the sex offenders register and ordering the forfeiture of his devices.
