In a disturbing case that has shocked animal welfare advocates, Nikki Haworth, operating under the name Haworth Arabian Stud in Blackpool, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a significant number of horses and neglecting their basic needs.The case, which culminated after over ten months of meticulous investigation by multiple organizations including the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, HAPPA, and Lancashire Constabulary, revealed the appalling conditions in which the horses were kept.
Prosecutor Carmel Wilde detailed the findings of RSPCA inspectors who visited the premises and discovered a scene of utter neglect.
The horses were confined within dilapidated stables that had been left untouched for months, with some lacking doors or missing wooden panels.
The bedding inside these enclosures was soaked in months of urine and feces, creating a hazardous environment for the animals.
The stables were so filthy that when the doors were finally opened, the accumulated muck spilled out, and the doors could not be closed again.
Inspectors found that the suffering of the horses was severe.
Many exhibited extreme lameness caused by overgrown hooves, which had become so painful that the animals could barely move.
Some horses were seen struggling to step down from their stalls, with one collapsing in the process.
The condition of six horses was so dire that veterinary advice led to their immediate euthanasia to end their suffering.
An additional five horses were euthanized later on welfare grounds, highlighting the severity of neglect.
The court was told that some of the remaining horses had not been outside in paddocks for an extended period, further evidence of the neglectful care they received.
Of the total 31 horses kept at the yard, only 20 were rescued and taken for care and re-homing.
The investigation uncovered that the horses had been subjected to prolonged periods of confinement, with little to no access to fresh air, grass, or sand paddocks.
The conditions described by the inspectors were among the worst they had ever encountered in their careers.
RSPCA inspector Carl Larsson recounted his experience during the raid in September 2018, describing the scene as horrifying.
He explained that he was appalled by the level of suffering inflicted upon the animals by the owner, Nikki Haworth.
The inspector detailed how the horses' hooves were so overgrown that they caused crippling pain, with some horses shaking from the agony.
One horse was seen collapsing as it attempted to leave its stall, unable to bear the pain any longer.
The inspector emphasized that the decision to euthanize the six horses was made solely based on veterinary advice, and not due to any inability of the RSPCA to handle the animals.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Nikki Haworth failed to appear in court to defend herself.
Instead, she launched a campaign of defamation online, targeting the RSPCA and Inspector Larsson.
The authorities confirmed that all euthanasia decisions were made with veterinary approval and under police authority, countering any claims of mishandling.
In sentencing, the court ordered Haworth to pay £4,000 in legal costs, imposed a six-month curfew, and banned her from keeping any animals for a period of ten years.
The judge’s verdict was clear, condemning her neglect and cruelty.
Sadly, it was later reported in November 2021 that Nikki Haworth had succumbed to cancer, bringing a tragic end to her story.
