NIGEL BIRCH FROM SWINDON AND STROUD JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING PHILIPPINES ABUSE STREAMS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Swindon and Stroud, Nigel Birch, a 66-year-old man, has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison after being found guilty of facilitating and funding heinous child sexual abuse activities involving minors in the Philippines. The case came to light following an investigation into Birch’s online activities, which revealed a disturbing pattern of payments and explicit content linked to abuse of young girls.

According to court proceedings, Birch had paid a mother in the Philippines a total of £25, with the intention of enabling her two young daughters, aged 10 and 15, to be sexually exploited in front of him via an online video stream. The arrangement involved the girls being abused by their male cousins, aged 12 and 15, at a location in the Philippines. Prosecutors detailed that Birch and the mother had engaged in conversations about the abuse, with Birch sending money and discussing the upcoming acts, although there was no definitive proof that the abuse was actually carried out.

Investigators uncovered that Birch’s bank account had been used to make 172 separate payments, indicating a pattern of ongoing financial support for these illicit activities. Additionally, authorities found that Birch possessed indecent images of children as young as seven years old. When questioned about the payments, Birch initially claimed that he was sending money to support a woman he had met online, purportedly to help her escape the sex trade. However, digital evidence, including Skype logs from his computer, contradicted his claims, revealing that he had set up the online shows where the abuse was to occur.

During police interviews, Birch admitted that he was funding these online displays and that he had been masturbating while watching them, admitting an attraction to minors. His actions and the evidence collected led to his conviction on charges of facilitating child sex offences and possessing indecent images of children.

Birch, who previously resided in Swindon but was living in Stroud, Gloucestershire at the time of his arrest, was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court. Judge Jason Taylor QC sentenced him to two years and eight months in prison. The judge also imposed a sexual harm prevention order to restrict Birch’s future activities and mandated that he register as a sex offender for life.

Following his arrest, Birch’s personal life was significantly affected. His wife left him, he was forced to relocate, and one of his daughters ceased all communication with him. The court heard that Birch’s online activities had caused considerable damage to his family and community.

Prosecutor Tessa Hingston described the case as a grave violation of children’s rights and emphasized the importance of the legal proceedings in bringing Birch to justice. She highlighted that police had acted swiftly after receiving intelligence about the payments and online activities, leading to the seizure of Birch’s laptop and three hard drives. These devices contained a collection of indecent images and chat logs that confirmed his involvement in the abuse scheme.

Judge Taylor concluded by condemning Birch’s actions, stating, “You obviously logged on for that show. It can’t be proved beyond doubt it took place. You made admissions, including that you derived sexual pleasure from what you saw on previous occasions. You said you had paid for shows on a dozen times even though you only got a return on about half of them.” His sentencing reflects the severity of his crimes and the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation.
