DENBIGH MAN NICHOLAS STUDLEY CAUGHT IN CHILD EXPLOITATION PLOT IN MOLD

In February 2017, a serious case involving a man from Denbigh, identified as Nicholas Studley, unfolded in Mold Crown Court, revealing disturbing intentions towards minors and raising significant concerns about his potential threat to young girls.

Studley, aged 50 and described as having no fixed abode but originally from Denbigh, engaged in highly sexualized conversations with what he believed to be the parents of a 13-year-old girl. He discussed plans to meet in a hotel once he could coordinate a business meeting in their area, indicating a disturbing interest in child exploitation.

However, the court was informed that the individuals he was communicating with were not the couple he believed them to be but were in fact undercover police officers. These officers had been tasked with investigating online users suspected of engaging in child sex exploitation and incest-related activities. They had posed as a couple with a 13-year-old daughter, engaging in conversations that quickly turned graphic and explicit.

During the trial, it was revealed that Studley had denied any intention of meeting the girl, claiming he was merely fantasizing and that the conversations were purely for his gratification. He insisted that he knew from the outset that he was speaking to police officers and that he had no real plans to meet the girl. He accused the police of manipulating the situation and trying to entrap him, asserting that he had set boundaries and never intended to act on his fantasies.

Prosecutor Sion ap Mihangel outlined that the defendant had attempted to arrange a meeting with a minor to perform sexual acts, and the conversations he engaged in were graphic and revealing of his unhealthy interests. The police, in their evidence, confirmed that Studley was the first to inquire about the girl’s age and suggested meeting in a hotel, which indicated a clear intent to pursue illegal activity.

In court, the jury, consisting of five women and seven men, unanimously found Studley guilty of attempting to arrange a child sex offence. The court was told that he had previously been convicted of distributing indecent images of young girls and breaching a sexual offences prevention order from 2010, which prohibited him from accessing online chat rooms and engaging in related activities.

Judge Niclas Parry expressed grave concern over the case, stating, “The facts of this case have raised serious concerns with me. It appeared to me that he has the potential to be an extremely dangerous man, particularly as far as young girls are concerned.” The judge ordered that Studley be remanded in custody until his sentencing in March and that he undergo an assessment under the dangerousness provisions to evaluate the level of threat he posed.

Addressing Studley directly in the dock, Judge Parry emphasized the gravity of his actions, noting that he had been convicted of a very serious matter, compounded by his previous convictions. The judge explained that the assessment would help determine the extent of the danger he might pose to young girls in the future.

In closing remarks, Judge Parry reflected on the nature of the case, acknowledging that it was a difficult and unpleasant matter for the jury to decide. He expressed regret that such cases had to be brought before them, emphasizing the importance of justice in protecting vulnerable children from potential harm.
