BIRMINGHAM NHS WORKER JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE
A 31-year-old NHS worker named Nicholas Palmer, residing at Ashbridge Walk, Park Side, Stafford, has been sentenced to two and a half years in jail after being found guilty of attempted rape.The incident occurred during a night out in Birmingham city center on May 31 last year, where Palmer, an operations department practitioner, engaged in sexual contact with a university student.
The victim, described as shy and modest who couldn't drink much due to her nature, was celebrating the end of her exams and met Palmer in a bar.
They initially had consensual contact, which continued as they walked down a side street off Broad Street.
However, the student later refused Palmer’s advances, stating no, and he attempted to 'overbear' her in an effort to rape her.
Palmer was convicted following a trial at Birmingham’s Crown Court last month.
During the sentencing, Judge James Burbidge QC commented that the case illustrated a modern story of two young people drinking excessively with disastrous results for both.
The court heard that Palmer's misconduct, especially when he was heavily intoxicated, has damaged his professional reputation and personal life.
The victim was studying at a Birmingham university and was away from her home when the attack happened.
Palmer's defense team acknowledged his dedication to his profession but admitted that his misconduct conclusions when intoxicated have tarnished his reputation and personal standing.
