NICHOLAS MCMURRAY SEXUALLY ASSAULTS WOMAN ON SWANSEA TRAIN
A disturbing incident involving a former train conductor has resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for sexual assault.Nicholas McMurray, aged 38, was employed as a train manager with Great Western Railway (GWR) at the time of the offense.
The assault occurred on the evening of June 22 last year, just before the train from Cardiff arrived in Swansea.
According to reports from the British Transport Police, McMurray approached an 18-year-old woman who was engaged in a phone conversation in the vestibule of the train.
He requested to see her ticket under the pretense of performing a routine check.
However, instead of a simple verification, he proceeded to inappropriately adjust her dress and sexually assault her during the encounter.
The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, reported the assault to station officers after the incident.
The police revealed that McMurray was standing near the stationary train when he was apprehended.
During his arrest, he attempted to mislead officers by claiming that the victim had tried to kiss him and that he had pushed her away.
He also falsely stated during the police interview that the woman had consented to his actions.
Detective Constable Farrell of the British Transport Police emphasized the gravity of the misconduct, stating, “He continued to hold the victim until the train pulled into the station and made sexually explicit comments to her before touching her again as she got off the train.” The police confirmed that McMurray was immediately removed from his duties as a GWR train manager and is no longer employed by the company.
At Swansea Crown Court on February 5, McMurray was found guilty of sexual assault and assault by penetration.
On Friday, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Detective Constable Farrell condemned McMurray’s abuse of his position, saying, “He completely exploited his role and took advantage of this young woman.
I want to acknowledge the victim’s bravery and strength in coming forward and cooperating with the police investigation.” GWR issued a statement confirming that McMurray resigned immediately during the disciplinary process, which would have likely resulted in his dismissal.
The company expressed their support for the victim and reiterated their commitment to safety and accountability.
They also noted that the incident only came to light because of the victim’s courage and determination to seek justice.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding passengers and holding offenders accountable for their actions.
