HUSBAND STALKED ESTRANGED WIFE WITH CCTV AND HID TRACKER IN HER CAR

A court heard that Nicholas Lloyd, aged 47, exhibited controlling and obsessive behavior toward his wife by installing surveillance equipment and hiding tracking devices in her vehicle to monitor her whereabouts.

Lloyd, from Rhosesmor, Mold, also falsely accused her of being unfaithful and made threats to kill her and their children during a trip to Lapland, claiming it would "make life easier".

He admitted to engaging in stalking that caused significant alarm and distress.

Today, a judge at Mold Crown Court described his conduct as "sinister" and condemned his actions.

The judge noted that Lloyd's behavior over an eight-month period until June of this year was both deliberate and sustained.

Skeptical of his assurances to reform, the court sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment.

Court records revealed that Lloyd and his wife, who separated, had been married for 12 years and shared three children.

Lloyd had previously installed CCTV cameras in their Halkyn home, with one positioned to monitor the stairs and playroom, though he claimed to have disconnected it later.

In 2017, he sent his wife a message about her behavior, prompting her to question how he knew — indicating she was aware of his spying.

Prosecutor David Mainstone explained that by 2022 the marriage was fractured, and Lloyd had moved out.

However, in October of that year, he returned to the family home, accused his wife of cheating, and threatened her life and that of a supposed lover.

The court was told that Lloyd would appear at the gym while she worked out or sit beside her in the jacuzzi as forms of intimidation.

On one occasion, Lloyd commented on her choice of dress, calling it "short".

In December, she reluctantly agreed to travel with him to Lapland to appease their children.

During this trip, Lloyd attempted to "win her back," but his behavior turned aggressive when he swerved their car, suggesting that killing everyone involved would "make life easier".

Eventually, she contacted police, leading to Lloyd’s arrest on December 15 of last year.

He refused to speak during police questioning and was released on bail with restrictions on contacting her.

The victim later discovered a tracking device in her car’s footwell.

She reported feeling deeply distressed and fearful, with her medication for depression being increased.

She no longer feels safe in her home and avoids walking her dog in the rural area near her residence.

Court statements indicated that the couple will be divorced and that their marital home is likely to be sold.

Defending him, Simon Rogers acknowledged Lloyd’s egregious behavior but stressed there was no physical violence and that his conduct was uncharacteristic.

Rogers explained that after the birth of their third child, Lloyd’s work commitments, including a significant financial project involving multiple deaths among colleagues, contributed to his increased stress, insecurities, and inability to cope with their relationship’s breakdown.

Although these factors do not excuse his actions, they provided context for his mental state.

Judge Rhys Rowlands condemned Lloyd’s behaviour as "deeply unsettling and wrong," criticising his persistent monitoring and harassment of his wife.

The judge described Lloyd as "a pretty inadequate individual," noting his determination to control and intimidate her, which caused her to constantly look over her shoulder.

Although Lloyd had no prior convictions, he had violated a bail condition by contacting his wife, and the judge expressed doubts about his promise to remain law-abiding.

To prevent further harm, Lloyd was sentenced to 15 months in prison and received a five-year restraining order solely prohibiting him from approaching or contacting his wife.
