NICHOLAS FAY, WEMBLEY MATHS TUTOR, JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST BOYS
In March 2017, Nicholas Fay, a 72-year-old private maths tutor based in Wembley, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to multiple sexual offences involving young boys he was tutoring. Fay pleaded guilty in Harrow Crown Court to four counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, a serious breach of trust given his role as an educator and mentor. The court was informed that Fay had persuaded four boys, aged nine and ten, to participate in sexual activities with him and with each other at his Wembley residence in July 2015. The victims, who trusted Fay as their tutor, were subjected to manipulative and inappropriate conduct, which they later disclosed to their parents. One of the boys confided in his parents about what had transpired, leading to Fay's arrest the following day.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Greenwood emphasized the gravity of Fay’s actions, stating, “What you did was serious. You were a maths tutor and were entrusted by the children and their parents – you abused their trust. You incited them to take part in activity with each other. You told them not to tell their parents, but fortunately they did.”
The court also considered historical allegations against Fay, revealing that four other boys had made similar accusations dating back to 1999 and 2006. These past allegations were used as evidence of Fay’s bad character.
In addition to his prison sentence, Fay was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. This order prohibits him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16.
Authorities have expressed concern that Fay may have more victims, given his 18 years of private teaching. They have urged anyone with information or who suspects they may have been targeted to come forward to assist ongoing investigations.
Initially, Fay refused to accept the charges, which caused significant distress and trauma for the victims and their families, as it meant they had to face the ordeal of giving evidence in court. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding and the devastating impact of abuse by trusted individuals in positions of responsibility.
