MAN JAILED AFTER ASSAULTING HIS PARTNER IN CHURCH
A 31-year-old man named Nicholas Couldwell, residing in Meadoway, Church, was involved in an assault on his then-partner, Catherine Francis.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to common assault and breach of a community service order.
According to the court, Couldwell had done less than a third of his 40-hour community service, serving only 14 hours.
The court heard that Couldwell had been depressed and agoraphobic after his baby daughter was put up for adoption.
During the incident, after consuming alcohol, he assaulted Catherine by grabbing her by the hair, dragging her around the house, and punching her with a clenched fist, which left her bruised.
Police reported that Catherine had simply had a go at him.
William Staunton, prosecuting for the Probation Service, stated that the assault occurred in a row that developed between them, with both under the influence of alcohol.
William Staunton indicated that the judge sentenced Couldwell to 21 days in jail, emphasizing that the 40-hour community service order was an alternative to imprisonment but had been partially completed.
