COLCHESTER CARE WORKER JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING VULNERABLE PATIENT
In October 2025, Nelson Ncube, aged 57 and formerly employed as a care assistant at a secure mental health facility in Colchester, received a sentence of nearly five years in prison after pleading guilty to two charges of engaging in sexual activity with a vulnerable patient under his care.He appeared before Ipswich Crown Court for sentencing, pertaining to offences committed between late 2020 and early 2023.
At that time, Ncube was responsible for supervising a patient detained under the Mental Health Act.
The court was told that Ncube exploited weaknesses in the facility’s security, despite the patient's room being close to the nurses’ station and monitored by cameras.
The misconduct involved taking the patient to unpublicised areas such as storage rooms and toilets.
Prosecutors indicated that the inappropriate behaviour started with unexpected physical contact and quickly escalated to overtly sexual acts.
It was also revealed that Ncube and the patient exchanged explicit photographs.
Judge Richard Kelly described Ncube’s behaviour as stemming from a “warped sense of responsibility,” especially after the defendant attempted to suggest that the patient had initiated the conduct.
Although Ncube was previously regarded as having a good character, he was sentenced to four years and nine months’ imprisonment.
His defence team highlighted his remorse, with the mitigation claiming that Ncube feels “nothing but shame and guilt” over the breach of trust involving someone he was supposed to safeguard.
