NEIL BEVAN FROM WITTERING SENT TO PRISON AFTER VIOLENT ATTACK ON POLICE OFFICER IN PETERBOROUGH
In a serious incident that unfolded in Wittering, Neil Bevan, a man with a troubling criminal history, was recently sentenced to prison following a violent assault on a police officer. The events took place during a routine visit to Bevan's residence, located in Maltby Close, Wittering, on February 9. An officer from the Public Protection Unit had arrived to conduct a standard inspection of Bevan's mobile phone, a procedure often carried out to ensure compliance with legal obligations and to gather evidence if necessary.During the course of the inspection, Bevan admitted to the officer that he had been deleting messages on WhatsApp. This revelation prompted the officer to attempt to seize Bevan's phone as part of the evidence collection process. However, Bevan's response was unexpectedly aggressive. He became violent, pushing the officer to the ground and punching him in the process. The situation escalated further when Bevan bit the officer on the shoulder and delivered a headbutt to his face, demonstrating a reckless disregard for law enforcement personnel.
Following the assault, Bevan was promptly arrested by the officer. His actions drew significant attention due to his prior criminal record, which includes convictions for possessing indecent images of children in both 2002 and 2011. As a result of these convictions, Bevan was registered as a sex offender until September 2020. His criminal history underscores the seriousness of his recent behavior and the potential risk he poses to the community.
On November 6, at Peterborough Crown Court, Bevan, who is currently without a fixed address, pleaded guilty to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm. The court sentenced him to a term of 22 months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his violent conduct against a law enforcement officer. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing individuals with a history of sexual offenses and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.
