NEIL ADAMSON FROM LERWICK SHETLAND FINED FOR STREET ASSAULT ON EX-PARTNER

In a recent incident that has drawn attention in Lerwick, Shetland, Neil Adamson, a 45-year-old man and father of two, faced the consequences of a violent confrontation with his former partner. The incident occurred on the streets of Lerwick, specifically outside Goudies Funeral Directors, on the 15th of March. Adamson was brought before Lerwick Sheriff Court to answer charges related to his aggressive behavior during this altercation.

According to court reports, Adamson admitted to physically assaulting the woman, whom he had previously been involved with in an on-again, off-again relationship that lasted for three years. The court heard that the assault involved him grabbing the woman, pushing her to the ground, and placing her in a headlock. These actions left the victim extremely distressed, as described by Procurator Fiscal Duncan MacKenzie.

The incident unfolded in the early evening, around 6:30 pm, when Adamson was driving along Scalloway Road. He reportedly saw his former partner and then exited his van to confront her. Witnesses, including two passing drivers, observed the attack and promptly contacted the police. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and arrested Adamson.

During the court proceedings, Adamson’s defense attorney, Gregor Kelly, acknowledged that his client’s conduct was inappropriate and unworthy of praise. Kelly explained that Adamson and the woman had argued the night before, and Adamson later took offense upon seeing her out with a friend. The defense also claimed that Adamson believed the woman had been attempting to damage his van, although Kelly emphasized that this was no justification for his client’s violent actions.

Kelly clarified that Adamson’s intention was to subdue the woman by putting her in a headlock, asserting that he did not intend to cause her harm. He also noted that Adamson and the woman still maintained a friendship, despite their breakup.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank, presiding over the case, remarked that this was another example of a domestically aggravated offence. Although no physical injuries were reported, the sheriff emphasized the seriousness of the assault. In light of the gravity of the offence, Sheriff Cruickshank decided to impose a financial penalty. Adamson was fined £450, along with a victim surcharge, as a measure to mark the severity of his actions and to serve as a reminder of the importance of respecting personal boundaries and the law.
