NATHAN GILTINANE'S BRUTAL ATTACK IN CAMBRIDGE LEADS TO EIGHT-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE

A man identified as Nathan Giltinane, aged 34 and residing on Walnut Tree Avenue in Cambridge, has been sentenced to eight years in prison following a violent assault on his former partner. The incident, described as a 'savage attack,' resulted in severe injuries to the woman, including a broken arm and fractured teeth, and has drawn significant attention from local law enforcement and the community.

According to reports, the assault took place on the night of November 13 last year. The woman, who was subjected to a brutal physical attack, managed to call NHS 111 for help, reporting that she was feeling dizzy. During the call, the call handler overheard Giltinane in the background attempting to coerce her into claiming she had simply fallen, raising suspicions about the nature of her injuries and prompting immediate police intervention.

Giltinane faced multiple charges, including coercive behaviour and criminal damage, which he denied. However, he admitted to the charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. The court proceedings, held at Cambridge Crown Court, resulted in his conviction and sentencing last Friday. In addition to his prison term, Giltinane was issued a 10-year restraining order, explicitly prohibiting him from making any contact with his victim.

Cambridgeshire Police detailed the events, stating that the woman was punched and kicked in the head during the assault. She called for help, describing her injuries as a black eye and a 'bust lip.' When officers arrived at the residence that evening, they found the woman with chipped front teeth and an arm that was so injured she could barely move it. Giltinane was present at the scene and was subsequently arrested. The woman was transported to hospital, where further examinations confirmed she had a broken arm, hair missing, and a lump on her head, necessitating a CT scan.

During her journey to the hospital, the woman told officers that Giltinane was responsible for her injuries. She recounted that he had kicked her in the head, causing her teeth to chip, and that she had lost consciousness during the attack. In his police interview, Giltinane claimed that he 'backhanded' his partner, which caused her to fall onto her arm. He insisted that his actions were in retaliation after she had hit him first, attempting to justify his violence.

The sentencing judge, Recorder James Willan KC, emphasized that there was no justification for the assault. He described how Giltinane had punched and kicked his partner while she was on the floor, causing multiple injuries. The court noted that the woman sustained bruising to her forehead, eye socket, shoulders, and the back of her hand, along with fractured teeth. The attack involved at least eight points of contact, illustrating the severity of the violence.

Furthermore, the court highlighted Giltinane's history of domestic violence offenses, indicating that he posed a significant risk of harm to future female partners. The judge concluded that his willingness to use substantial violence made his release or rehabilitation unlikely at this stage.

Detective Constable Frankie Enticknap commented on the case, stating, 'Giltinane savagely attacked his partner, and then encouraged her to lie about her injuries. I would like to thank the NHS 111 call taker who realised something wasn’t quite right – it’s precisely suspicions like these that can make all the difference. Giltinane’s behaviour left his partner incredibly frightened, and no-one should ever be made to feel that way. Domestic abuse is never acceptable and there is no excuse.'
