NADEEM AHMAD FROM HANDSWORTH BANNED AFTER HORRIFIC DOG CRUELTY IN BIRMINGHAM
Nadeem Ahmad, a resident of Handsworth, Birmingham, born on March 23, 1986, was found guilty of severe animal neglect after a disturbing investigation revealed the deplorable conditions in which he kept dozens of dogs and puppies in his backyard. The case, which drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities, uncovered a scene of neglect and squalor that shocked even seasoned inspectors. On October 10, 2020, a coordinated operation involving the RSPCA, West Midlands Police, and Birmingham City Council dog wardens was carried out at Ahmad’s property located at 27 Maxwell Avenue, Handsworth. The warrant was executed following multiple reports from concerned members of the community about the welfare of the animals kept at this address. What authorities discovered was a backyard transformed into a grim, hazardous environment, with dozens of dogs confined in cramped, filthy kennels and roaming freely in the small yard.
The yard was found to be covered in urine and faeces, with hazardous debris such as jagged pieces of wood scattered across the area. The conditions were described as 'filthy and cramped,' with some dogs suffering from dehydration due to the absence of accessible water. Among the animals were mainly bull breeds and German Shepherds, some of which were found inside six makeshift kennels, while others wandered freely around the yard. One particularly distressing sight was a German Shepherd with eight puppies lying on a damp, urine-smelling floor inside a kennel that lacked bedding. The kennel’s door was partially obstructed by inward-facing barbed wire, posing additional risks to the animals.
Inspectors noted that the kennels were in a deplorable state, with no bedding provided and faeces present in all of them. The yard itself was littered with raw bones covered in flies, indicating a complete disregard for the animals’ health and hygiene. The environment was fraught with hazards, making it clear that Ahmad had failed to provide a safe and suitable living space for the dogs.
A veterinary examination of the animals revealed that several were underweight, further highlighting the neglect. The vet concluded that the conditions of the kennels and the overall environment demonstrated a blatant neglect of the animals’ welfare, with no adequate provision for their basic needs, including access to clean water and proper shelter.
During the court proceedings, Ahmad admitted to two animal welfare offences. He acknowledged that he had failed to take reasonable steps to ensure the animals’ needs were met, particularly in providing a suitable environment and adequate diet, including access to fresh drinking water. His actions were deemed a violation of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
As a result of his conviction, Ahmad was sentenced to a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete a 20-day rehabilitation program, perform 150 hours of unpaid community work, and pay £200 in costs. Most notably, he was banned from owning or keeping any animals for a period of ten years, a measure aimed at preventing similar neglect in the future.
This case underscores the importance of animal welfare laws and the ongoing efforts of authorities to combat cruelty and neglect in the Birmingham area, particularly in the Handsworth community where this distressing incident occurred.
